go cold turkey 復習
今回も自分の英単語帳の中から拾ったものを紹介します。
それがgo cold turkeyです。初めの推測ですが、coldに「面白みのない」そしてturkeyには「馬鹿なやつ、ダメなもの」という意味が含まれているのは既知だったので、「失敗に終わる」と訳されるのではないかと思いました。以下で詳しく確認していきます。
まずCollins English Dictionaryを引くと、cold turkeyで “Cold turkey is the unpleasant physical reaction that people experience when they suddenly stop taking a drug that they have become addicted to.” と定義されています。
続けてCambridge English Dictionaryの力を借りると、“the period of extreme suffering that comes immediately after a person has stopped taking a drug on which they depend: Six years ago she went cold turkey on (=stopped completely) a three-pack-a-day smoking habit.” と記載がありました。
最後に由来を探るべくThe Phrase Finderで調べると、Canadian newspaper The Daily Colonist, October 1921の記事では “Perhaps the most pitiful figures who have appeared before Dr. Carleton Simon are those who voluntarily surrender themselves. When they go before him, they [drug addicts] are given what is called the ‘cold turkey’ treatment.” とあり、さらに “In the state of drug withdrawal the addict’s blood is directed to the internal organs, leaving the skin white and with goose bumps.” となっています。
まとめると、go cold turkeyで「（習慣など）急にやめる」となるかと思われます。また、由来に関しては様々な諸説ありでしたが、私なりの解釈では、麻薬中毒者に頻繁に起こる禁断症状としてgoose bumps（鳥肌）が挙がり、その肌の様子が七面鳥に重ね合わせられるためcold turkeyといった表現がうまれたのではないかという理解に至りました。（bro-taro-world @ Calgary）
