lichen /lάɪk(ə)n/ を取り上げます。mossが「コケ」なので文脈的に藻類系の何かを指すと推測しました。『ジーニアス英和辞典』を引くと「地衣類」、また医学用語で「苔癬」とありました。ちなみに地衣類とは、菌類と藻類の共生体でかつ単一の生物のようにみえるものの総称を意味します。

LDOCEによると“a grey, green, or yellow plant that spreads over the surface of stones and trees”と定義されてあり、同義語にmossと記載されていました。(Kiwi girl)
