　今回はleeway /líwèɪ/ です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版、大修館書店）によると「風圧、風落」や「水をあけられること、（時間の）損失」や「（時間・金銭などの）ゆとり、余裕、（判断・行動などの）（自由）裁量」とありました。LDOCEにはfreedom to do things in the way you want toと記載されています。

　例文としてはStates now have more leeway to restrict the sale of guns.が挙げられていました。

　イギリス英語ではこのleewayを使って「残業」をmake up leewayと表現するようです。(rain)
