国立感染研究所の発表によると、風疹患者が今年の累計で770人にのぼり、昨年一年間の93人と比べて8倍超になったとのことです。

Rubella patients increase to 770

The number of rubella patients reported in Japan from the beginning of this year through Sept. 23 totaled 770, up more than eightfold from the 93 for the whole of last year, the National Institute of Infectious Diseases said Tuesday.

In the week through Sept. 23, the number came to 104, exceeding 100 for the third straight week.

Patients in Tokyo and three neighboring prefectures — Chiba, Kanagawa and Saitama — accounted for over 70 of the year-to-date total. Tokyo saw the largest number of patients, at 239, followed by Chiba, at 179, Kanagawa, at 80, and Saitama, at 54.

　rubella /ruːbélə/ を取り上げます。病気の一種であることはわかりましたが、しっかりと覚えられていなかったので気になりました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると「（医学）=German measles」と記載されていました。改めてGerman measlesを引くと、「風疹」であることがわかりました。

　LDOCEには “an infectious disease that causes red spots on your body, and can damage an unborn child” と定義されています。胎児への影響が心配されることが述べられています。

　Online Etymology Dictionary で語源を見てみると、 “Modern Latin, literally “rash,” from neuter plural of Latin rubellus “reddish,” diminutive of ruber “red”” と説明されており、症状の一つである紅斑によって皮膚が赤く見えるところからきていることがわかりました。（aqua）
