　strew /strúː/ を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第四版、大修館書店)には「〈物〉を〔場所に〕ばらまく、まき散らす、敷きつめる」や「〈言葉・困難なこと〉でいっぱいである」や「…の上に散らばって［ばらまかれて］いる」とありました。LDOCEにはto scatter things around a large areaやto lie scattered over somethingと定義されています。

　オランダ語で「ばらまく」という意味のstrooienやドイツ語で「まき散らす」という意味のstreuenが語源となっているようです。(rain)
