昨年10月、神奈川県座間市で男女9人の遺体が発見された事件で、白石隆浩容疑者が強盗・強制性交殺人と死体損壊、死体遺棄の罪で起訴されました。

dismember /dɪsˈmembə/ が気になりました。直訳すると「メンバーを外す」となりますが、当然それでは意味が通りません。どのような意味になるのでしょうか。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)を引くと「...の手足を切断(ばらばらに)する、(国土・組織など)を分割する」とあります。また、LDOCEでは “to cut a body into pieces or tear it apart” “to divide a country, area, or organization into smaller parts” と定義されています。この語を使用した例文としてBut they needed other aids, for their teeth and nails could not readily dismember anything larger than a rabbit.やMr. Corry might have to dismember the company more than he wants to.が挙げられています。
なぜmemberが使われているのか気になります。そこで調べてみると、この語には「手足」(『ジーニアス英和辞典』第五版、大修館書店)と言う意味がある事が分かりました。(seventh-dan)
