今回取り上げる表現は、call A’s bluff です。過去のブログにも取り上げられている bluff ですが、今回はどういった意味で使われているのでしょうか。
Cambridge Dictionary で意味をみると、“to make someone prove that what they are saying is true, or to make someone prove that they will really do what they say, because you do not believe them” とあり、LDOCE には “to tell someone to do what they have threatened because you do not believe that they will really do it” と定義されていました。ここから bluff は「こけおどし」の意味で使われていることがわかります。
以上のことから、call A’s bluff は「やれるものならやってみろと言う」という意味であることが言えます。(OkaUchi)
