本日取り上げる表現は、”plunk”/plˈʌŋk/です。
『ウィズダム英和辞典』には、「…をドスンと投げ出す，ポンと置く」と載っていました。
しかし、この意味ではあまり文意にそぐいません。
他の辞書も2，3調べてみましたが、最適な訳が見つからなかったため、野球の専門用語ではないかと思い、スポーツニュースで実際の結果を見てみました。それによると、エンゼルスのテイラー・ワード選手がアストロズのピッチャーから4回に「デッドボールを受けた」とのことでした。このことから、”plunk”は野球用語で「デッドボールを与える」という意味であると分かりました。
「デッドボール」を表す表現には他にも” hit by pitch”があります。(Morihiro)
