今回はstop short ofを取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版（大修館）には「[…を/…するの]思いとどまる, 突然止まる, 手前で止まる」とありました。Camabridge DictionariesのWeb 辞書には"f you stop short of doing or saying something, you decide not to do or say it although you almost do"と定義されています。例文としてはI stopped short of telling him the brutal truth.があり，特定には至たっていないこと，立証するまでには少し足りない（short）ということになります。

したがいまして記事では「容疑者を特定しないまま捜査を行う」となります。(amphibian)
