　台風20号の風により、風力発電用の風車の支柱が倒れているのが見つかりました。

Typhoon No. 20 topples wind turbine

The destruction caused by Typhoon No. 20 included the knocking down of a wind turbine on Awajishima island in Hyogo Prefecture that was discovered Friday.

The 37-meter-tall supporting column of a wind turbine at the Hokudan Earthquake Memorial Park had broken from its foundation.

The typhoon passed through the Kinki region overnight, injuring 26 people, some due to the wind making them fall, in nine prefectures along the way. It then traveled north over the Sea of Japan off the Hokuriku and Tohoku regions.

　wind turbine /tˈɚːbɪn/ を取り上げます。日本語でもカタカナでタービンと使われることをふまえると、何となく意味が予想できます。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で引くと「発電用の風車、風力タービン」とありました。

　LDOCEには “a modern windmill for providing electrical power” と定義されています。windmillについては “a building or structure with parts that turn around in the wind, used for producing electrical power or crushing grain” と説明されています。風力発電に使われる、白く細長い形のものがwind turbineにあたるようです。

　支柱が倒れたことで怪我人が出なかったのは幸いでしたが、ニュースで現場の様子を見て台風の恐ろしさを改めて感じました。（aqua）
