印象に残った表現の１つを紹介します。
the salt of the earthです。これは、先日の授業中に先生が頻出フレーズとして紹介されたものの１つで、直ぐには意味を掴めなかったですが、down to earthと付加説明がありました。「現実的な、率直な」といった訳に関連しているのでしょうか。以下で確認していきます。
Collins English Dictionaryで定義を引くと、“If you describe someone as the salt of the earth, you have a lot of respect for them as the type of person who deals with difficult or demanding situations without making any unnecessary fuss.” と記載があります。
Dictionary.comで起源を探ると、“In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus tells his followers, who are mainly fishermen and other simple people, “Ye are the salt of the Earth.” となっています。
