eat crow 復習
先週末まで、夏の語学研修スケジュールの中でもプレゼンやreading等の課題に追われた一週でしたが、こういった状況は後のsemesterを考えれば何度もやってくるものなので、柔軟な対応をしてしっかり乗り越えていきたいと思います。
今回紹介するのは eat crowです。これは、研修内のとある授業中に先生の方が仰った表現で、初めnegativeなイメージが湧きましたが、今ひとつピンときませんでした。以下で確認していきたいと思います。
Collins English Dictionaryを引くと、“If someone eats crow, they admit that they have been wrong and apologize, especially in situations where this is humiliating or embarrassing for them.” とあります。
語源をWorld Wide Wordsで探ってみると、“…towards the end of the war of 1812, an American went hunting and by accident crossed behind the British lines, where he shot a crow. He was caught by a British officer… This officer then levelled his gun and said that as a punishment the American must take a bite of the crow… when the British officer returned his gun he took his revenge by making him eat the rest of the bird.” とあり、英米戦争時のアメリカ将兵の物語に関連があることが見受けられます。
上記をまとめますと、eat crowで「恥を晒す、自らの誤りを認める」となるでしょうか。由来をもう一度振り返ると、罪の償いとして死んだカラスを無理やり食べさせられることは本人にとって実に嫌な行為ではあるものの、結局は「自らの行いを認めざるを得ない」状況を表しているかと思われます。（bro-taro-world @ Calgary）
