purgative 復習

Brexiters are divided now only on the question of whether to minimise the pain or embrace it as a purgative procedure to fortify the nation’s soul. (Skip the rest)

まず意味を OED でみると、“Strongly laxative in effect” “Having the effect of ridding one of unwanted feelings or memories” とありました。語源を同書でみると、“Late Middle English: from Old French purgatif, -ive, from late Latin purgativus, from purgat- ‘purified’, from the verb purgare.”

(OkaUchi)
