Melbourne has finally lost the title of world's most liveable city after a seven-year reign.

The Australian city came in second place on the Economist Intelligence Unit's 2018 ranking of the world's most liveable cities, missing out on the top spot by just 0.7%.

　今回取り上げるのはcumbersome /kˈʌmbɚsəm/です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版、大修館書店）には「（運搬・着用するのに）やっかいな、扱いにくい」や「〈方法・過程などが〉複雑で手間がかかる」や「〈言葉などが〉複雑な、長ったらしい」とありました。LDOCEにはa process or system that is cumbersome is slow and difficultやwords or phrases that are cumbersome are long or complicatedなどと定義されていました。

cumberは「〈人など〉を〔…で〕悩ませる」といった意味です。それに「…を引き起こす」といった意味の-someがついてできた形容詞のようです。また、cumberの語源は「横たわる」という意味のcubareというラテン語であるということも分かりました。(rain)
