beat around the bush 復習
先日の語学研修で学んだ表現を紹介します。beat around the bush です。初め、bushの「訳が分からない」という訳とbushの「茂み」から、「茂みの周りをうろちょろしている内に居所が分からなくなる」ことを指しているのかと思いました。以下で確認していきます。
Cambridge Dictionaryでは、“to talk about lots of unimportant things because you want to avoid talking about what is important:” とあります。
また、語根を探ると、“She also beats the bushes, which is a way to rouse birds so that they fly into the net which others are holding.” と記載されていました。（https://english.stackexchange.com/questions/14257/where-does-the-idiom-beating-around-the-bush-come-from）
以上から、beat around the bushはfigurative languageの一部で、茂みの周りをたたいて獲物の鳥を追い出すことに由来し、「遠回しに言う、要点に触れない」と解釈できるかと思われます。逆に反義語としてはget to the pointが挙げられそうです。（bro-taro-world @ Calgary）
