Early risers thrill to peak of Perseid meteor shower

Skywatchers in Japan didn't mind losing sleep as they were mesmerized by the peak of the Perseid meteor shower early on Aug. 13, which this year coincided with a new moon and dark skies.

Myriads of shooting stars including small ones that flashed and vanished in the blink of an eye, along with bigger ones that streaked through the sky, were seen in areas blessed with good weather.

Spectacular meteors that blazed trails through the constellation Orion and the Milky Way captivated early risers in Oguni, Yamagata Prefecture, toward daybreak.

　early riserを取り上げます。riseを起床するという意味で捉えると、早起きをする人のことをさしていると思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）でriserを引くと「1起床する人；（前に形容詞をつけて）起きるのが…の人　2（建築）（階段の）け上げ　3（複数形で）（舞台の）ひな壇」とありました。1の例には “an early riser” で「早起きの人」 “a late riser” で「朝寝坊」が取り上げられています。

　LDOCEには “early/late riser” の形で “someone who usually gets out of bed very early or very late” と定義されています。veryが用いられているところから、とても早いか遅いかのどちらかになるようです。

以前、ゼミでは早起きの人のことをearly bird ということを学びましたが、それの言い換え表現として今回の表現も押さえておきたいです。（aqua）
