cold shoulderを取り上げたいと思います。文脈から、「冷遇」といった意味になるのではないかと推測しました。『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、cold-shoulderで「冷遇[無視]すること」とありました。また、LDOCEではgive sb / get the cold shoulderで“to behave in an urn friendly way towards someone that you know”と定義されています。なぜ「冷たい肩」で「冷遇」という意味になるのか気になったのでインターネットで調べてみました。諸説あるようで、確実なものはないようですが、その１つに、昔「いやな客には、冷たい羊の肩肉しか出さなかった」ことからこのイディオムが生まれたというものがありました。この説がインターネット上には1番多かったように思います。
