今回はgray /gréɪ/ を紹介します。色彩の「グレー, 灰色の」の意味から転じた用法です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版（大修館）には「白髪（まじり）の」「高齢の, 円熟した」とありました。また、grayingで「高齢化（する）」という意味になります。
定義をCambridge Dictionaryで調べたところ “having hair that become grey or white, usually because of age” とありました。この記事ではgraying Japanとあり、「日本全体に白髪が生えた状態」といったニュアンスから「高齢化した日本」という意味になります。
寿命が延びていくという喜ばしいこと共に、高齢化社会の問題が浮かび上がってきます。私たちが高齢者となる時にはどうなっているのでしょうか。想像もつきません。(amphibian)
