carpe diem 復習

映画観賞 (13 Reasons Why)をしている際に出会った単語を紹介します。

carpe diem /ˈkär-pe-ˈdē-ˌem/ です。初め聞いたときはswear wordsの類に当てはまるのではないかと予想し、同時に、偉人の諺の引用からくる単語であるような印象を受けました。以下で確認していきます。

残念ながら手持ちの辞書には記載がなかったのですが、Merriam-Websterでは、“the enjoyment of the pleasures of the moment without concern for the future. The multimillionaire said that he owed his success in life to his in carpe diem.” とあります。

また、Cambridge English Dictionaryで引くと、“a Latin expression meaning ‘seize the day’, used for saying that people should enjoy the present rather than worrying about the future.”

また、このフレーズの語源が気になったのでThe Phrase Finderの力を借りると、“The original source for ‘carpe diem’ is the lyric poet Quintus Horatius Flaccus. ‘While we’re talking, envious time is fleeing: pluck the day, put no trust in the future.” と説明があります。

総括して、“carpe diem”はラテン語、そしてローマの詩人ホラティウスの詩に由来し、上記のpluck the dayやseize the dayなどの英語訳及び定義に見られる通り、「1日を摘め」から「今を楽しめ、1日1日を大切にしろ」を示唆していることが分かります。ちなみに、元々のラテン語が指す意味として、carpeが「花を摘む」、diemが「1日」を表しています。(The Phrase Finder)cf. live for today, take no thought of the morrow

carpe diem、感覚的ではありますが、この言葉から何か強いパワーをもらったような気がします。留学生活の一瞬一瞬を無駄にしないよう、これからも日々を楽しく生き、さらなる自己啓発に努める期間にしたいです。(bro-taro-world @ Calgary)
