Alberta firefighter dies while battling Ontario wildfires

Alberta Premier Rachel Notley says an Alberta firefighter has died unexpectedly while he was helping fight wildfires in Ontario.
In a statement Friday, Notley said that Jerry Gadwa, a resident of Kehewin Cree First Nation in Alberta, was helping with firefighting efforts near the town of Red Lake, Ont., about 100 km east of the Manitoba boundary, when he died Thursday.
"On behalf of the Government of Alberta, I want to offer our deepest condolences and support to the family, friends and colleagues of Mr. Gadwa," Notley said.

取り上げるのはcondolences /kənˈdəʊlənsɪz/です。文脈から「お悔やみを申し上げる」のような意味で用いられていると予測可能でしたが、念のため調べてみました。以下辞書の定義です。

Oxford Dictionary of English (2th): “(usu. condolences) an expression of sympathy, especially on the occasion of the death of a person’s relative or close friend”

Collins COBULD Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (8th): “N-PLURAL When you offer or express your condolences to someone, you express your sympathy for them because one of their friends or relatives has died recently”

『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版（大修館）：「[…に対する]お悔やみ、哀悼；[通例〜s]弔辞」

まとめると、基本的にはcondolences 複数形で用いられ「お悔やみ、弔辞」を意味し、『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版（大修館）によるとoffer [ send, express, give] one’s condolencesで「お悔やみを言う」そして、Please accept my sincerest condolencesで「心からお悔やみ申し上げます」の意になるということがわかりました。

またCollins Advanced Lerner’s Dictionary (8th)には“N-UNCOUNT A message of condolence is a message in which you express your sympathy for someone because one of their friends or relatives has died recently”との記述もあり、不可算名詞としての用法も存在するようです。
