語学学校の授業の中で先生が使っていた表現を紹介します。throw a spanner into です。直訳してみると「スパナを投げ込む」になり、初めは全く理解できませんでした。そこで今回取り上げることにしました。

『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版（大修館）：put [throw] a spanner in the works｟英略式｠「（進行を）妨害する」（＝｟米｠put [throw] a (monkey) wrench…）

以上のことから英国ではthrow [put] a spanner into/inといい、北アメリカではthrow [put] a (monkey) wrench into/inと表現するということがわかりました。この表現を用いた先生はBritish Englishを話す方なのでspannerという語を用いたのだと納得がいきました。「スパナを投げ込む」＝「邪魔をする、台無しにする」といったところでしょうか。[ko-chi @ Calgary]
