(go) back to the drawing board 復習

先日語学学校の授業の中でピサの斜塔についてのビデオを見ました。その中から拾った表現を紹介します。(go) back to the drawing boardです。直訳すると「画板、製図版に戻る」ですが、本来はどのような意味になるのでしょうか。確認していきます。

先生は“start all over again”と説明してくださいました。以下は辞書の定義です。

Oxford Dictionary of English (2th), back to the drawing board: “used to indicate that an idea, scheme, or proposal has been unsuccessful and that a new one must be devised”

Collins Free Online Dictionary, back to the drawing board: “If you say that you will have to go back to the drawing board, you mean that something which you have done has not been successful and that you will have to start again or try another idea.”

Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English Online, (go) back to the drawing board: “if you go back to the drawing board, you start again with a completely new plan or idea, after the one you tried before has failed”

『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版（大修館）：「最初からやり直す、白紙に戻す」

まとめると「（失敗を踏まえたうえで）もう一度最初から／一からやり直す」という意味になるのではないでしょうか。日本語では「白紙」と表すのに対して、英語では「画板、製図版」と表現するのですね。下記に授業内で扱った動画のURLを貼っておくので是非参照してみてください。[ko-chi @ Calgary]
