　カナダのシャルルボワでG7 (先進国首脳会議) サミットが開幕しました。

Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany said they were “illegal,” while Mr. Trudeau said they were “insulting and totally unacceptable” — and that was in the carefully worded public statement. In a phone call with Mr. Trump, he was said to be even more blunt.

　estrange /ɛstréɪndʒd/ に注目しました。『ジーニアス英和辞典第5版』(大修館) によると「疎遠になる、仲たがいをする、よそよそしくする」という意味があります。次に『ケンブリッジ英英辞典』をみると “ If you are estranged from your family or friends, you have had a serious argument with them and are no longer friendly with them” とあり、親交のあった二人のうまが合わなくなり友達でなくなる様を表していると窺えます。

　estrange はラテン語で「外の、他の」といった意義のある “extraneus” が語源とされることがわかりました。またこの語は堅い表現であるため口語では break up や fall out を用いるのが相応しいそうです。

　今回の会議では主にアメリカの輸入制限政策を巡り他国に利益が発生しない点について議論がなされる見通しで、安倍首相も公正中立な貿易が重要であると主張する見通しだそうです。(Happidra)
