　今回取り上げる語は、toff /tάf/ です。文脈から判断するのが難しく、出会ったことのない語だったので、以下で意味等を確認していきたいと思います。
　まず意味を Cambridge Dictionary でみると、“a rich person from a high social class” とあり、LDOCE には “someone who is rich or has a high social position – used to show disapproval” と定義されていました。また、同書に “British English old-fashioned” とあります。
　次に語源を OED でみると、“Mid 19th century: perhaps an alteration of tuft, used to denote a gold tassel worn on the cap by titled undergraduates at Oxford and Cambridge.” とあります。
　以上のことから、toff は英国英語の古い表現で「上流階級」という意味であることがわかりました。(OkaUchi)
