ROME (AP) — The latest installment in the rivalry between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic met expectations for one tight set.

Then Nadal pulled away for a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 win to reach the Italian Open final on Saturday.

In their 51st meeting but first in more than a year, Nadal’s court coverage eventually proved too much to handle for Djokovic, who is still regaining his form from a persistent right elbow injury.

“That was a tough battle, a good level of tennis, a combination of good tactics and great shots from both of us,” said Nadal, who has had injury trouble of his own over the past year.

気になったのはpull away /pʊl əˈweɪ/ です。

awayとある所から、圧倒するといった意味を含んでいるのではないかと推測しました。

『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)では「(車・人が)動き始める、(競争相手を)引き離す、離脱する、身を振り切る、他を抜いて前に出る、力ずくで離す」とありました。

また、LDOCEでは “to start to drive away from a place where you had stopped” “to move ahead of a competitor by going faster or being more successful” と記載されていました。

BIG4である2人の対決は今回も熾烈な戦いとなりました。第1セットで、手に汗握るタイブレークをものにしたナダル選手は、余裕を持って第2セットを取ることに成功しました。
