cutout を取り上げます。直訳で考えると「切り抜き」という意味になりそうですが、ここではどのような意味で用いられているのでしょうか。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べると「1切り抜き画（細工） 2（電気の）安全開閉器」とありました。
LDOCEには “the shape of a person, object etc that has been cut out of wood or paper” や “a piece of equipment that stops a machine that is not working properly” と定義されています。紙だけではなく、木でできたものも含まれるようです。
