wind down 復習

　たくさんの有名アーティストが使っていることからもしられるギブソンが破綻申請しました。

Gibson, whose electric guitars have been played by stars including Elvis, Keith Richards and Jimmy Page, has filed for bankruptcy protection as it struggles with $500m (£367m) of debt.

　今回取り上げるのはwind down /waɪnddaʊn/ です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版,大修館書店）には「〈人が〉緊張から解放されリラックスする」や「〈活動・力・熱意などが〉だんだん弱まる,弱める」や「〈時計のぜんまいが〉ゆるんでとまる」や「〈時間・事などが〉だんだん終わりに近づく」とありました。LDOCEにはo gradually reduce the work of a business or organization so that it can be closed down completelyなどとあり、ギブソンの経営状況がよくわかります。

　またwind upにも「〈会社・店などを〉たたむ,清算する」などという意味があるようです。以前ゼミでもwind up brokeで「無一文になる」という意味があるのを学んだことを思い出しました。(rain)
