気になった単語はflagship /flæɡʃɪp/ です。
直訳だと「旗船」となりますが、それでは意味が通りません。一体どのような意味になるのでしょうか。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)では「旗船、将官艇、(ホテル・会社・製品などで)最も重要なもの、主力商品、主力店舗」とありました。
また、LDOCEでは “the most important ship in a group of ships belonging to the navy” “the best and most important product, building etc that a company owns or produces” と記載されていました。
記事に戻ると、様々な企業がこの暑さを味方にしようとしています。一例を挙げると、飲料メーカーのキリンは自社の商品である「一番搾り」の生産数を上げ、売り上げの増加を見込んでいます。更に、五月とは思えない暑さは野菜の栽培にも影響を与えています。ゴールデンウィークも前半を終え、とにかく暑かったの一言ですがこれからやって来る夏に備え新たな涼しさを求めなければいけないかもしれません。(sixth-dan)
