impediment 復習

Getting on for one million people in Britain wait each day for a text or a phone call to let them know whether an employer has work for them. Twenty years ago few had heard of zero-hour contracts, but the number of workers covered by them has increased more than fourfold since the recession of a decade ago. …
The narrative goes as follows. Britain has record levels of employment and the lowest jobless rate since the mid-1970s, and that’s because there are few impediments to the free market in labour. (Skip the rest)

 今回取り上げる語は、impediment /ɪmpédəmənt/ です。文脈から「障害」と推測することができます。以下で語源も合わせて意味を確認していきます。
まず意味を Cambridge Dictionary をみると、“something that makes progress, movement, or achieving something difficult or impossible” とあり、LDOCE には “a situation or event that makes it difficult or impossible for someone or something to succeed or make progress” と定義されていました。
次に語源を OED でみると、“Late Middle English: from Latin impedimentum, from impedire” とあります。
 以上のことから、impediment は困難なことをやり遂げる際の「障害」という意味を持つことがわかりました。(OkaUchi)
