　今回取り上げるのはasymptomatic / èɪ̀sɪ̀mptəmǽtɪk / です。symptomとあるので、「症状」に関連する語なのは分かりましたが、それ以上は分からなかったので調べてみました。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版,大修館書店）には「〈人・病気が〉自覚症状のない,無症候性の;〈病気などが〉潜在的な」とありました。LDOCEではif someone or the illness that they have is asymptomatic, the illness has no physical signsと定義されていました。

a-が「非,無,欠如」を表すとある通り、symptomaticは「兆候となる」などのasymptomaticとは反対の意味になることが分かります。

　記事によるとこの特別なタトゥーにより、asymptomaticの段階でがんが発見できるようです。臨床試験まではまだまだ遠いとのことで、実用化はもっと先の未来のことになりますが、もし実用化できればたくさんの人の命が救われることになるのは言うまでもありません。(rain)
