“It takes much longer than usual to drive. I’m wondering how long this situation will continue,” said Hiroyuki Mizuno, a 70-year-old resident of the island.

私が今回取り上げる単語は”reckless” /rékləs/です。記事では警察が泳いで本州まで向かったのではないかという推測について、潮の流れや水温の関係から“It would be reckless to swim.”と地元のフェリー会社の人が言ったものです。泳いでいくのは得策ではないだろうというような意味かなと考えました。（『ジーニアス英和辞典第五版』大修館）では「向こう見ずな、無謀な、無鉄砲な」とありました。”It would be reckless~“という表現はこれから使えそうだなと思いました。
瀬戸内の方で起きているとはいえ恐ろしいので早く捕まらないかと思うばかりです。（Creative）
