solace 復習
熊本地震発生から2年が経ちました。震災関連の記事より気になる単語を見つけました。

ASO, Kumamoto Prefecture--On the second anniversary of their son's tragic passing in a powerful earthquake, Takuya and Shinobu Yamato are moving forward, thanks to exchanges with elementary school students and yellow flowers that he would have loved.
Hikaru Yamato, 22, was believed to have been caught up in a massive mudslide triggered by the second of twin strong temblors in April 2016, which destroyed a large steel bridge and carried his yellow car down a steep gorge.

本日取り上げる単語は見出しにあります、solace/ˈsɒlɪs/です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)ではじめに、take solace inで調べてみましたが載っていなかったので、同単語そのものを調べてみたところ「[悲しみなどに対する/〜から離れるための]慰め、慰安、安堵」あるいは、「[人・心などにとって]慰めになるもの」とありました。ちなみに、前者の類表現として押さえておきたいのは、comfort(for/from)です。そしていずれの場合においても、forやfromが共起されるとのことでした。さらに加えて、”take solace from” で「〜から慰めを得る」という表現がありました。
このことから見出しのtake solace inもほぼ同じ意味であることが考えられます。(WREN)
