U.S. Iwakuni air station expands with fighter jets from Atsugi
IWAKUNI, Yamaguchi Prefecture--The U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni is now one of the largest air bases in the Far East, much to the chagrin of residents here who have long complained about military noise.
The Defense Ministry’s Chugoku-Shikoku Defense Bureau notified the Iwakuni city government March 31 about the relocation of around 60 aircraft from the U.S. Naval Air Facility Atsugi in Kanagawa Prefecture.

chagrinを取り上げたいと思います。『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、「(失敗などによる)無念、くやしさ」とありました。また、to A’s chagrinで「A〈人〉にとって残念なことに」と載っていました。LDOCEも確認してみたところ、annoyance and disappointment because something has not happened the way you hopedと定義されていました。記事ではmuch to the chagrin ofという形で使われていますが、「英辞郎 on the WEB」ではこの形で「(人)にとって大変残念なことに、(人)は大変悔し(残念・無念)がったが」と説明されています。騒音被害に悩まされている地元住民の気持ちを表す表現となっています。(Blue Sky)
