　今回取り上げる語は、quixotic /kwìksάṭɪk/ です。一番気になったのは quixotic の語源で、「現実離れした」という意味がどこからきているのか、ということをメインに以下で確認していきます。
　まず意味を LDOCE でみると、“quixotic ideas or plans are not practical and are based on unreasonable hopes of improving the world” とあり、Cambridge Dictionary には “having or showing ideas that are different and unusual but not practical or likely to succeed” と定義されていました。
　本題である語源を OED でみると、“Late 18th century: from Don Quixote + -ic.” とあります。Don Quixote を調べると、これは Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra によって書かれた小説の主人公であり(Wikipedia 参照)、その主人公が理想に囚われていたことから、quixotic が「ドンキホーテ的な、現実離れした」という意味として用いられたと考えられます。このように社会に影響を与えた物や人の名前が一つの一般語彙として会話に用いられることは割とあるように思います。こうして単語数は増加していくのだと感じました。(OkaUchi)
