A typical day off for a successful man in the fashion industry used to go like this: Play golf during the day and go to a club in Tokyo’s Ginza area at night. Things are different now, however: The latest trend is to collect contemporary art and build a city hotel.
Art and hotels are key elements of recreation for young corporate owners. If you’re selective about the art you purchase, it may go up in price. And if you can run a hotel with a clever strategy, it will be popular and profitable. Unlike golf and night clubs, art and hotels can be lucrative. In other words, it’s probably difficult to succeed in the fashion industry today unless you have a sense for art.
A good example of this may be the “hotel koe tokyo” that Stripe International Inc. opened in Shibuya Ward, Tokyo, on Feb. 9. It occupies the first three floors of a building constructed on the former site of the Shibuya Parco Part 2 shopping complex, while the fourth to ninth floors of the property, which is owned by Hulic Co., are used as offices.

また、LDOCEでは “a job or activity that is lucrative lets you earn a lot of moneyと載っており、語源としては、ラテン語のlucrum(=to gain)から来ている事が分かりました。
石川さんは、若者に人気のファッションブランドであるアースミュージックアンドエコロジーを立ち上げたことでも有名です。その他にも自身の故郷である岡山を盛り上げたいという思いから「オカヤマアワード」を創設し、その年に岡山で活躍した(または岡山県出身で活躍した)人物を表彰する等、精力的に活動しています。
そんな彼には「止まったら負け」という言葉があります。この言葉を通して、当たり前のことですが一歩一歩歩みを進めていく事が大切だなと痛切に感じました。(sixth-dan)
