ANIME NEWS: New Kawasaki store will offer Ghibli goods for ‘grown-up girls’

Offering fashion items for "grown-up girls" inspired by Studio Ghibli Inc. anime films, the Closet brand will open its first permanent shop on March 20 in the Lazona Kawasaki Plaza shopping complex in Kawasaki.

The shop will offer special items produced in collaboration with popular fragrance brand Fernanda, in addition to limited-edition pre-sale goods themed on “Kiki’s Delivery Service.”

Closet is a new spinoff brand of Donguri Republic, a chain of stores dealing in Studio Ghibli character-themed goods. Focusing on Studio Ghibli’s leading ladies who are gentle-hearted but strong-minded and live their lives being true to themselves, the brand adopts its motto as “The place where I can be myself.”

　spinoffを取り上げます。日本語でもドラマや映画などのスピンオフ作品とカタカナで使われる言葉ですが、ここではどのような意味になるのでしょうか。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると「副産物（from, of）、（ヒットしたテレビ番組、映画などの）焼き直し、続（姉妹）編」とありました。

　LDOCEには “a television programme involving characters that were previously in another programme or film” や “a separate and partly independent company that is formed from parts of an existing company, or the action of forming a company in this way” などと定義されています。

　記事の内容に戻ると、a new spinoff brandは新しい姉妹ブランドと捉えることができるかと思います。また上記の英和辞典によると、動詞としてのspin offは「（会社の一部から）（新会社）を独立させる」という意味になるようです。（aqua）
