parole / pəróʊl /の意味が気になりました。life sentenceは「終身刑」を意味するので34年連続の終身刑、上記では34件の罪状のことを表しています。そこから仮釈放または釈放を意味すると予測しました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』によると「仮出所; [a~]仮出所期間」「《言》パトロール、運用言語; 《軍》合言葉」「誓言,〈釈放後も逃亡しないという〉捕虜宣誓」と記載されているので今回は1番目の意味です。また動詞としても使用できます。
LDOCEでは“permission for someone to leave prison, on the condition that they promise to behave well”と定義されています。使用例として前置詞onを用いるHe was released on parole after serving two years.とbe eligible for 「適格な」と共起したShe will become eligible for parole in 19 months.が載っていました。
