jump 復習

本日の裏ゼミにて、この話題についての記事を読む機会がありました。改めて、AJWで関連する記事を読んでいたところ、気になる表現があったので取り上げます。

A South Korean delegation returned home on Tuesday from a first-ever meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, to announce the agreement on a North-South summit next month, the first since 2007.
The South Koreans also announced that Kim had offered to hold talks with the United States on denuclearization and to halt nuclear and missile tests while negotiating. North Korea's recent missile tests have included two fired over Japan.
U.S. President Donald Trump said North Korea seemed "sincere."
The former diplomat said Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe faced uncertain times.
"As for Washington, Trump is such an unpredictable guy. If anything will help elevate his approval domestically, he'll jump," he said.

jump/ dʒʌmp/ は誰もが知っている単語であると言えるでしょう。しかしながら、最後のクォーテーションの部分を見てください。「飛ぶ」という意味だけでは不十分のような気がします。

Cambridge Dictionaryには" to move or act suddenly or quickly"とあります。「トランプ氏は全く予測不可能な人だ。」とありますので、「突然、なんらかの行動に出る」という意味でjumpをとらえると、最後の文は理解できます。

今日のゼミで、英語のアルファベットから「まさか」を読み取るという感覚がわかったよな気がしました。鍵はやはり、スキーマです。目まぐるしく変わる世界情勢に敏感になる一方で、過去を見返すということも自分にできることの１つだと思いました。(WREN)
