A Romanian university has published the results of a study on how safe it is to eat snow.

Istvan Mathe, a professor at the Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania, said Feb. 8 that the 2017 experiment showed it was safe to eat snow that was a half-day old, and safer to eat it in the colder months. By two days old, though, snowfall is not safe to eat.

Scientists collected snow in Miercurea Ciuc, central Romania, in January and February and placed it in hermetically sealed sterile containers. While fresh snow had little bacteria, after two days the number quadrupled.

Mathe said he decided to test the idea after he saw his children eating snow.
