latrine /ləˈtriːn/ を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）を引いたところ、「（野営地・野戦病院での，土を掘った）臨時の便所，かわや」と載っておりました。Oxford Dictionary of English (2th) には、 “a toilet, especially a communal one in a camp or barracks”と定義されております。語源はラテン語のlavareで、 “to wash”の意味を持ちます。
以上のように、外に掘られた便所のことを指すようです。俗語として一般的なトイレを表す場合もあるようです。この記事では、猫が自ら砂を掘って用を足すことから、latrineが用いられていると考えられます。(Gomez)
