catch a few zeds

　今回はアルファベットの “Z” に関する表現です。アルファベット一語で意外な意味を持つことがあるので、今一度辞書を確認してみると面白いと思います。
　今回取り上げる表現は、catch a few zeds です。今回の記事には “catch up on a few zeds” とあります。ちなみに “catch up on” は『[仕事などの]遅れを取り戻す、[睡眠などの]不足を取り返す」という意味の句動詞です(『ウィズダム英和辞典』参照)。
　まず、辞書で意味を確認します。Collins Dictionary をみると、“to have a nap” とあり、「うたた寝」を指します。また、この表記は informal で、かつ英国英語であることがわかります。さらに別の辞書をみていくと、米国英語でもこのような表現があり、『ジーニアス英和辞典』(大修館)をみると、“catch [get] some [a few] Z’s” となっていました。LDOCEを確認すると、こちらも “to sleep” とあります。以上のことから、今回の記事の “catch up on a few zeds” は、「(足りてない分の)睡眠をとる」と訳すことができます
　では、なぜ “Z” が眠りを指すのでしょうか。『ジーニアス英和辞典』(大修館)で “Z” をみると、発音が /zíː/ で、意味に「グー<いびきの音>」とあり、そこから目を移していくと “Z” を指す “zee” が載っていました。これは “zeezeezee” でお馴染みなのです。「グーグーグー」という寝息から「眠り」を連想させているのだと考えられます。(OkaUchi)
