アフガニスタンにある国際NGO事務所が襲撃され4人の方が亡くなりました。
Attackers have detonated explosives before storming the offices of the Save the Children charity in the eastern Afghan city.
At least two people have been killed and 12 injured, officials say. It is believed about 50 staff were in the building at the time.
At least three gunmen are involved in the attack, reports say, with fighting continuing on the upper floor.
No group has yet said it was behind the attack.

“detonate” /ˈdet̬.ən.eɪt/ を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典第5版』(大修館) によると、「(大きな音と共に) 爆発させる、大爆発する」といった意味がありました。次にケンブリッジ英英辞典をみると “to (cause something to)explode” と何かが爆発するあるいは爆破させるニュアンスを指しているとわかります。
“detonate” はもともと「発光する」といった意義のあるラテン語 “detonare” からきているそうです。また “detonare” を分解すると「下へ、下に」といった意味を含む接頭辞 “de” に「雷を落とす」というニュアンスを表す “tonere”のそれぞれ2語で構成されていることがわかりました。したがって「雷が落ちるほどの勢い、規模での爆破や爆発」という解釈が後になされ “detonate” が「大爆発する」といった意味で使われるようになったと推察できます。
この国際NGO「セーブ．ザ．チルドレン」は戦争、紛争、飢餓や迫害などから世界の子供たちを守る活動をしている非営利団体のことで、この団体の理念が国連の「子供の権利条約」の条項に基づいていることでもお馴染みだそうです。(Hapidra)
