KUSATSU, Gunma (Jiji Press) — A volcano in Gunma Prefecture, erupted Tuesday morning, leaving one Self-Defense Forces member dead and 11 other people injured due to volcanic rocks and an avalanche.

At around 10:05 a.m., local fire authorities received an emergency call reporting that the eruption had caused an avalanche at an international ski resort in the Gunma town of Kusatsu.

In response to the eruption on Mt. Motoshirane, the Japan Meteorological Agency raised its volcanic alert to Level 3, which restricts entry into the mountain.

Some people were injured by broken glass after rocks from the volcano hit a gondola at the ski resort and damaged its windows.

According to Kusatsu town officials, about 80 people, including skiers, were evacuated to an area near a ropeway station around the peak of Mt. Kusatsushirane, which includes Mt. Motoshirane, after they were temporarily trapped in gondolas due to a blackout that followed the eruption.

The Defense Ministry said six Ground SDF personnel were hit by the avalanche during ski training at the avalanche site, together with one private citizen.

At the time of the eruption, 30 helicopter unit members of a GSDF brigade were engaged in training for snowfield operations. The other 24 members were safe.
