(CNN)Former astronaut John Young, a NASA trailblazer whose six journeys into space included a walk on the moon and commanding the first space shuttle flight, died Friday after complications from pneumonia, NASA said Saturday.
He was 87.
"NASA and the world have lost a pioneer. Astronaut John Young's storied career spanned three generations of spaceflight; we will stand on his shoulders as we look toward the next human frontier," NASA Administrator Robert Lightfoot said.

trailblazer/ˈtreɪlˌbleɪzə $ -ər/を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版(大修館)には「草分け，先駆者，開拓者」とありました。

blazeのみでも、「…の先駆けとなる，道を開く」という意味になり、例文として"blaze a trail"で「先駆者となる。」とも記載があります。

pioneerはこの記事のtrailblazerの言い換えとしても用いられていますが、他にも同じような意味を持つpathfinder「(未開地の)探索者，開拓者、先駆者、草分け」を思い出します。どれもクルマの名前になっています。

ODLCEで調べてみるとtrailblazerは"someone who is the first to discover or develop new methods of doing something"に対しpathfinderは"someone who goes ahead of a group and finds the best way through unknown land"とありました。
trailblazerは現代の事業や前人未到を成し遂げることに対し、未開の地を探索する冒険家などで用いられやすいのではないかと思いました。

先日、歴史に名を残す星野仙一さんもお亡くなりになられ、同じように日本でも寂しい気持ちが漂いますが、改めて彼らの素晴らしい功績を振り返り希望をももらうことでしょう。
