calligraphy 復習
1月5日に日本武道館で日本の伝統文化である書道のコンテストが行われました。
Hundreds of students participated in a New Year calligraphy contest at Tokyo’s Budokan on Jan. 5. Children were split up by age group and asked to perfectly draw a word or phrase in traditional Japanese style.
calligraphyを取り上げます。LDOCEによると“the art of producing beautiful writing using special pens or brushes, or the writing produced this way”と定義されています。つづいて『ジーニアス英和辞典』を引くと「能書;書道」とありました。Japanese calligraphyと言われることもあるようです。
また、反義語にcacographyとあったので調べてみたところ手持ちの辞書には載っていませんでした。インターネットWeblioで確認すると「悪筆、誤記、つづり誤り」とありました。念のためMerriam-Websterで定義を調べると“bad spelling” “bad handwriting”とありました。
さらに語源を調べるとギリシャ語のcallos（=beauty 美しい）とgraph-,gram-（=a letter 文字 ;to write 書く）からきていることがわかりました。(Kiwi girl)
