This spectacular moon-plus-cranes photograph was taken Jan. 1 when the satellite was approaching its zenith.

The cranes were wintering on the Izumi plain, the largest such seasonal gathering for the species in Japan. Some cranes were flying to their preferred spots alone, while others flew in a flock.

　“winter”を取り上げます。「冬」という意味を持つ単語であることは誰しも知っている単語だと思います。この単語が動詞として使われると、「«場所で»冬を過ごす(over)«in»」という意味になります(『ウィズダム英和辞典』)。確認のためにLDOCEも引いたところ、“to spend the winter somewhere”と定義されていました。他の季節を表す単語にも動詞としての意味があるので、興味がありましたら調べてみてください。ちなみに、「冬眠」を“winter”で表現することができるのではないかと思ったのですが、「冬眠する」は“hibernate”というまた違う表現がありました。(Blue Sky)
