　愛知県犬山市の日本モンキーセンターで冬至の恒例行事となっているたき火のリハーサルが行われました。

Who could resist the smell of sweet potatoes baking in an open fire on a cold winter’s day?

Staff at the Japan Monkey Center made the bonfire for their Japanese Yaku macaques in a rehearsal for an annual event that starts on the shortest day of the year, Dec. 22. The monkeys happily took part, gobbling up the baked treats in the warmth.

　bonfire /bάnfὰɪɚ/ を取り上げます。fireの頭にbonがついていますが、これがつくことでどのような意味になるのでしょうか。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると「（祝いの）大かがり火；（野天の）たき火」とありました。

　LDOCEには “a large outdoor fire, either for burning waste or for a party” と定義されています。いらないものを燃やす場合と、お祝いごとで火をたく場合の２つがあるようです。

　この意味を持つようになった経緯は、goo辞書によると、中期英語のbone fireが関連しており、「骨を燃料として燃える火」というところから、火葬に用いる薪をさすようになったことが説明されています。bonが接頭辞になるのかと思いましたが、boneのneが抜けた形だったことがわかりました（aqua）
