KYOTO--The kanji character chosen by the public as best representing 2017 is “kita” (north), symbolizing a year dominated by reports of North Korea’s ballistic missile launches and an underground nuclear test.

“swing”を取り上げます。「揺れ動く」といった意味ですが、今回は異なる意味で使われています。『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、他動詞の項目の第４義に「«…から/…へ»（正反対に）〈感情・意見・態度など〉を急に変える、翻す«from / to»」とありました。また、LDOCEでは“if emotions or opinions swing, or if something swings them, they change quickly to the opposite of what they were”と定義されています。記事では“swung the vote”と使われており、これは「北」という文字に票が動いた理由について言及するために使われています。(Blue Sky)
