Going to Tochigi: My share

Eight of us went to a junior high school in Sano, Tochigi. Dr. Tanabe gave a special lecture there and we helped him.

The theme for the lecture is about giving some tips to be a good dictionary user. As part of Dr.Tanabe's lecture. we, eight seminar students were given about 30 min each to talk about how we have been using English dictionaries.

In our division, we first showed a couple of words/phrases and discussed the meanings. Students seemed to enjoy their "word/phrase hunts. This was followed by our tips of making the best use of English dictionaries.

While we were doing this, I was a bit surprised to see that some students had already put their sticky labels on the pages of their own dictionaries. Dr. Tanabe has visited the same school and what he calls "dictionary walking" has taken the root here and that tradition has been handed down from one generation to another. Looking back upon my days at junior high, no students did such an thing. I thought these students were really lucky in having a wonderful tradition and habit. See this with my naked eye certainly stimulated me to do more of this "dictionary walking" and study English harder.

I had a really great time in Tochigi. I appreciate the teachers of the junior high school, and Dr. Tanabe having given me such a wonderful opportunity. (Blue Sky)
