　rubber-stamp / rabə stǽmpɪŋ / を取り上げます。表記より「ゴム印」を想像できますが, 本文では議会を形容している点に着目しました。『リーダーズ英和中辞典』(研究社)を引くと, 「十分考えずに賛成する人[官庁, 議会]」「ボスの命令にすぐ従う政治家」とありました。動詞としても用いられ, 口語で「軽々しく承認する」となります。Merriam-Webster.comには “a mostly powerless yet officially recognized body or person that approves or endorses programs and policies initiated usually by a single specified source” と定義されていました。

　“rubber” に因み, “rubbing alcohol” では「消毒用アルコール(surgical spirit)」を指すそうです。 “rubbing” からは手に消毒液をすり込む様子が伝わってきます。また “spirit” といえば「魂」として認識していましたが, 通例, 複数形で「(揮発性の)有機溶剤」を示すということを併せて覚えておきたいと思います(同英和辞典)。(Cayu)
